2022 edition of the international violin making competition

A look back at the first edition of the International Violin Making Competition, dedicated to the cello, which took place from January 19 to 23, 2022.

Organised by Talents & Violon'celles in partnership with the Philharmonie de Paris, this first edition of the International Lutherie Competition was placed under the patronage of cellists Sol Gabetta and Raphaël Merlin.

Chaired by Raphaël Pidoux (replacing Raphaël Oleg, who was ill), the jury was composed of cellists Yi-bing Chu, Astrig Siranossian, and Tatjana Uhde, as well as luthiers Jean-Jacques Rampal, Serge Stam, and Isabelle Wilbaux. The instruments presented at the Competition were played and tested by the cello section of the Orchestre de Paris.

Six prizes were awarded to professional luthiers. Three instruments made by students from the schools received prizes, and one of them has now joined the facsimile collection of the Museum of Music.
