"Ständchen" (Serenade in English) is one of the best-known songs from Franz Schubert's song cycle "Schwanengesang" (Sweet Song). Composed in 1828, shortly before Schubert's death, it is based on a poem by Ludwig Rellstab. The song is often performed by a singer accompanied by a piano, although Schubert also wrote a version for choir and piano. "Ständchen" is known for its expressive and romantic melody, as well as for its lyrics, which evoke the image of a nighttime serenade beneath a loved one's window.
