"The Pearl Fishers" is an opera by Georges Bizet, created in 1863. The story takes place in Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) and features pearl fishermen competing for the love of a young Hindu princess, Leila.
Nadir gives up his life of freedom at sea and his friendship with Zurga to be with Leila. He is ready to sacrifice everything for her, even though he knows she is promised to another man. He is also ready to accept the consequences of his actions, even though he knows he will be punished for breaking his tribe's laws. The theme of passionate love and the sacrifices it entails is therefore central to Nadir's character in the opera.
